The off-take agreement involving Singapore, facilitating the cross-border export of Green Ammonia from India to Japan, marks the inaugural collaboration among these three nations.
Chennai: Thiru. M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, virtually inaugurated the construction of a green ammonia plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. During his speech, the Honorable Chief Minister highlighted Tamil Nadu’s leading role in renewable energy efforts, contributing significantly to India’s energy transition goals. He expressed optimism that the Tuticorin project will pave the way for positioning Tamil Nadu as a worldwide center for green hydrogen production. This joint initiative demonstrates the dedication of partner nations – India, Singapore, and Japan – to promoting a sustainable future for the region.
The foundation stone is laid following an agreement between Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Sojitz Corporation, and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha for a green ammonia offtake from India to Japan. Speaking on the occasion, Vipul Tuli, Chairman – South Asia, and CEO – Hydrogen Business, Sembcorp Industries, said, “With its renewable resources and investor-friendly policies, Tamil Nadu is a frontrunner state in realizing India’s green hydrogen ambitions. Sembcorp is honored to be part of this historic moment, as the efforts of India, Japan, and Singapore come together in Tamil Nadu to make a mark on the global green hydrogen industry.”
“This represents a major milestone in the partnership between Singapore and India to promote the growth of sustainable energies. It emphasizes the contribution that Singaporean companies, with their extensive knowledge, can make in supporting India’s economic progress. By targeting Japan as the final market, this initiative also demonstrates the intermediary role that Singaporean companies can facilitate in third-party collaborations. We commend Sembcorp for this recent accomplishment,” expressed Mr. Tan Soon Kim, Deputy Managing Director of Enterprise Singapore.
Tamil Nadu’s steadfast dedication and favorable policies towards renewable energy projects, backed by supportive measures and subsidies from the Government of India, as well as the anticipated financial backing (Ammonia/Hydrogen CfD) from the Government of Japan, are set to establish Tamil Nadu as a frontrunner in energy transition endeavors. Sembcorp will manage and manufacture green ammonia at a plant spanning 160 acres in the crucial port area of Tuticorin. Initially, the plant will generate 200,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually for export to Japan. The preliminary engineering and design work for the plant has already started.
Earlier this year, Sembcorp signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu during the Global Investment Meet to establish a green ammonia manufacturing plant in the state. This initiative aims to generate job opportunities in the Tuticorin region and enhance the growth of this vital port area.As a prominent energy company in Asia, Sembcorp is teaming up with different partners to investigate the creation and export of green ammonia as a means to drive forward the energy transition in the region. Leveraging its exceptional wind asset productivity, which is crucial for producing large-scale low-cost green hydrogen, Sembcorp will utilize its proven expertise showcased in its current renewables portfolio of 4.7GW in India to manufacture competitively priced green ammonia in the country.
